Get the most out of your handmade soy candles — from first burn tips to storing them with care.
Your handmade soy candle is more than a pretty object — it’s a small ritual, a slow moment, a breath of calm.
To help it last longer, burn beautifully, and bring joy from first light to final flicker, here are our favorite care tips — from maker to you.
1. First burn = most important burn
The very first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the entire top layer to melt evenly — edge to edge.
This prevents “tunneling” (when wax burns straight down the center), and ensures an even burn every time after.
Tip: For standard Colo candles, this usually takes about 2 to 3 hours.
2. Trim your wick (yes, really)
Before each burn, trim your cotton wick to ¼ inch (about 6 mm) or wooden wick to ⅛ inch (about 3 mm).
This prevents soot, helps the candle last longer, and keeps the flame calm and clean.
3. Let it rest between burns
It’s tempting to relight your favorite scent right away — but let your candle cool completely before the next burn.
This protects the wick and helps the wax reset evenly.
4. Don’t burn it too long
More isn’t always more. For best results, burn your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
This helps preserve the fragrance and avoids overheating the jar or wax.
5. Store with care
Keep your candle away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture when not in use.
Soy wax is sensitive — it can discolor or soften if stored in warm or humid spaces (like sunny windowsills or steamy bathrooms).
6. Use a snuffer, not a blow
To preserve the scent and prevent smoke, use a candle snuffer (or gently dip the wick into the melted wax with a tool).
Blowing it out might seem easier, but it can release smoke and disturb the wax pool.
7. Embrace natural imperfections
Our soy wax candles are made without additives — and that means they may “frost,” crack slightly, or show texture.
These aren’t flaws — they’re signs of purity, proof that what you’re burning is real.
